Bike Fitting
- Bike fittings are done either on an adjustable size-cycle or your current bike
- Bike fittings are included as an integral part of all new bike sales here at Bespoke
- We also do bike fittings for riders with existing bikes that want to optimize their position
- The cost is £200 for a fitting
- This is fully refunded on all bike purchases over £2500 (bought within 3 months of the fit)
- A 50% fitting credit will be applied to all bike purchases below £2500
- A fitting for 2 bikes (ie a road and a Tri bike) is £300
- A bike fitting takes c 2hrs - please bring cycling gear and shoes
- We strongly encourage follow-up fits to reflect the changes the body naturally makes over time
- These are offered at the discounted rate of £75 for a 1 hr follow-up
We are very proud of our involvement in the big push towards mainstream acceptance of bike fitting
We simply cannot imagine buying a bike without getting a professional bike fitting as part of the buying process.
We feel that the investment you make in a bike fitting is probably the single best improvement you can make in your cycling efficiency, comfort, performance and ultimately enjoyment
Why get a bike fitting
Interested in increasing your efficiency, performance, comfort and reduce the chance of injury? Read on!
Far too often shops try to force round pegs into square holes and as such its the rider who is expected to accommodate the bike. The whole point of bike fitting is to flip that on its head - we get the bike to fit you.....
To do that we need to understand you, your body, your cycling history and your cycling goals.
We also understand that the body does not exist in a vacuum - its a dynamic thing and you will gain and/or lose weight, fitness, core strength and flexibility over time.
So a bike fitting needs to understand that your position may also evolve over time.
The fitting process
1.
We first start with an interview, during which we will go over your cycling history and your future cycling aspirations. By doing this, we will discover if you have any injuries or physical limitations that may currently inhibit your cycling performance.
2.
We will then measure you and take note of how your body is proportioned - for instance, have you got long femurs in relation to your torso?
3.
We will then do some exercises to discover your core strength and flexibility/range of motion. By doing the exercises we will be able to better align your body when on the bike, and help increase cycling efficiency. We will also recommend exercises to help you to increase your flexibility and core strength.
4.
Your cleat/pedal interface is of vital importance. Through this small area of your body, all your power is transferred. By understanding the dynamics of your foot and leg biomechanics, we can stabilize your feet and legs for greater power, comfort and injury prevention. If required we can suggest custom Sidas insoles to better support the foot.
5.
Then we go to the heart of the session - the fitting itself. We either do the fitting on an adjustable size cycle or your current bike. We will digitally capture the bike's current position (contact points) and then also capture your body angles in this current position. We then begin the process of position optimization and make the required changes to improve your cycling position. At every stage of the process the Retui 3D system is displaying your body angles in real-time. So the fitting is very much a case of art (the human eye and experience) with science (cutting edge 3D motion catpure software). At the end of the session when we happy we have optimized your position on the bike we will digitally capture the bike again. We know have a permanent record of your 'ideal' position on the bike. Comparing the before and after positions often makes very interesting reading!
6.
If If you are doing the bike fit as part of a new bike purchase we will review all the options with you and discuss how the characteristics of the various frames and components that you are considering would compliment your contact points, riding style and cycling aspirations. So it may be that Brand 'B' will give us the most flexibility to best achieve your ideal contact points. And to us thats far better than simply buying Brand A because its a nice colour, or because a certain pro rides
it.......
7.
If you are using the fitting to optimize your current bike we will go through changes we have made and the best way to achieve these changes - so it could mean a change of bar width/shape, stem length/angle, saddle or seatpost layback.
The fitting system we use
We are very proud of our association with Retul and we were the first fitting studio in Europe to use this cutting edge 3D motion capture system
Retül is a state-of-the-art motion capture system designed specifically for collecting the most accurate and realistic data for bike fit technicians. By gathering data from key eight anatomical points in the cyclist's riding position, fitters are able to profile existing (before) and ideal (after) angles for their client's custom needs, which could be to gain more efficiency and performance, more comfort or maybe to fit the customer around an injury.
The passive data collection devices still used by many fitters today, such as a tape measure and plumb bob, are outdated and less accurate because they are subject to human error. Fitting with the Retul system however, provides sub-millimeter accurate data that is organized into an easy-to-read report both for the certified fit-specialist.
Retül, however, allows the bike fit expert to capture 100% objective data in a dynamic state and evaluate multiple viewpoints (3-D) simultaneously while the rider is pedaling. This system requires only a PC and +/- 100 square feet of space for line of sight requirements but can easily be packed away for conserving space or taking the system with you.
Retül optimizes the biomechanics of the rider while taking into consideration why people choose to get a bike fit:
• Performance
• Comfort
• Injury prevention
The process is very simple: we attach 8 LED markers onto the athlete's body that get placed in key anatomical locations. The active system flashes each LED discreetly as the infrared light travels from the LEDs on the body points to the sensor on the tripod. The sensor then triangulates the position of the LED in 3D space. The system can track these points to within a millimetre of true position under different workloads. (i.e. biomechanical position changes significantly between an athlete spinning lightly and a hard effort.).
This is what makes this system so unique... and why pro athletes, coaches, and leading cycling scientists are flocking to get their hands on Retul. No other system can measure moving body angles this accurately and spit it into a bike fit specific report.
The system flashes an LED every 2.1 milliseconds. That's 476 times per second and the system takes a full set of body measurements every 34 milliseconds (29 full sets of body data per second) So we can get a real time view of the rider's position and pedaling action at different workloads.
Back to top ^Biomechanical Corrections
Improving Efficiency and Power
Muscular tightness and/or weaknesses can cause sideways and rotating forces that reduce the power you can produce and also increase the stresses on joints. As such incorrect biomechanics limits your performance potential and increases the likelihood of injury. During a Biomechanical Correction session, we aim to lengthen tight muscles, activate and strength weak muscles and then teach you how to integrate it with correct pedaling.
Pro cyclists are cardio-vascular monsters. Unfortunately much of this is genetic and one cannot easily replicate that. However if you have ever watched a pro cyclist pedal you will see the tremendous fluidity and efficiency in the pedal stroke. They seem to spin at a very high cadence with little apparent effort. That is because their bio-mechanics are so good. Its a similar analogy to golf - the distance you hit the ball is determined by timing, not how big or strong you are. Someone with great timing can hit the ball miles with little effort, because the whole body is working in sync. A less talented golfer will wildly thrash with his arms, expending far greater effort with less to show for it.
With cycling, these skinny pros can produce tremendous power because their pedal action is so efficient they waste no energy - all efforts are transferred to the pedal stroke. The Glutes, hamstrings and quads are all recruited in sequence, as such more power is applied because you are not dominating the stroke with the quadriceps only.
1 hour Initial Consultation £65
45 minute Follow-up treatment £50
On a personal note I can confirm how useful these sections are. I think of myself as a reasonable cyclist but when Ben made me do some core exercises he was astonished at how poor my core strength was. I simply did not know how to activate my glutes. By looking at this he predicted when I was on a bike I would be very quad dominant. And sure enough I was, meaning there was a noticeable dead spot in my pedal stroke where my glutes should have been firing to push the pedals back.
First Ben worked on my glute strength and ability to recruit them in isolation, and then we took these exercises onto the bike.
Its still early days, and I will focus on this all winter, but already my fluency and cadence has ridden and with it the watts I can produce. I am a firm believer !
